Susanne Gruhler is a self-employed Portrait-Photographer from the South of Germany, but is a Cape Town Girl at heart. She first visited South Africa in 1981 and immediately fell in love with this country, and especially Cape Town. And that was before she even knew that it is the gayest city in the world.
In 2007, she felt burned out, and decided to do something that she might love to do – so she started travelling again. And in Cape Town, she found inspiration for this project. It was not the city itself that inspired her, but the wonderful, proud, and openminded lesbians of Cape Town.
The women portrayed in her photographs are not professional models. They are just being ´themselves` as proud and wonderful Lesbians, and this is what she aims to capture in her work.
The exhibition of her portraits at the Artscape Theatre, Cape Town, South Africa, which was held as part of the Cape Town Pride Festival in February 2008, was a personal success.
