Cape Town has many amazing lesbian couples, and each month we take a closer look into the life one one such couple. A special thanks to Kirsty and Catherine for sharing their story with us this month.
Catherine:
We met three years ago in high school and a week later we were known as “those lesbians” at school. Even though some meant it as a derogatory statement, every time I was called a “dyke”, I felt proud, because I was dating one of the prettiest girls in the school.
This was a rather rocky start to our relationship, given that we were young, Kirsty wasn't out and I was just leaving school. We went through it all together, coming out to the family, telling our friends, leaving school, starting varsity and moving out of the house. Kirsty has always been by my side quietly supporting me in all my endeavors. I appreciate that she makes an effort to do the things I like best, whether it be watching The Simpsons with me, doing Cycle Tours with me or attending every event my society (Rainbow UCT) organises. She is the kindest, funniest and most intense person I have ever met. I knew she was special when she so readily gave up her reputation as a traditional young woman to be with me. Having come out a year earlier than her, I knew how hard that was to do that.
I love Kirsty more than I can say. I don't think I can put into words how much I care about her, want to be around her and am in love with her. I love you Noonbug, you're a beautiful person.
Kirsty:
Catherine walked up to me one day after school and started cracking really lame jokes to get my attention. She was a few years older than me and I knew her as the only “out” girl at school. I smiled and blushed, surprised that my crush was finally paying attention to me. A week later she plucked up the courage to ask me out and we became an item. Being known as a “goodie-two-shoes” ballerina and then coming out as a lesbian proved to be the toughest experience I've had to endure. However I can honestly say that the experience has made my bond with Cat unbelievably strong. We do so many things together; we hike together, cycle together, read together, and in so doing, grow together. Often we are told that we are too young to be in love but I have never doubted our relationship, and after almost three years together I am even more certain of our love. Catherine is not only my girlfriend, she is indeed my best friend. She cheers me up, she comforts me when I cry, she holds me when I need to be held, she makes me laugh and most importantly she listens to me. I love you Catherine Saint Jude Pretorius, you're my angel.
