Cape Town has many amazing lesbian couples, and each month we take a closer look into the life one one such couple. A special thanks to Ayesha and Candice for sharing their story with us this month.
Candice:
We met in the most cliché way possible! I was a waitress at a restaurant that Ayesha had been frequenting for two years. And even though I had been working there for two years, we had never seen each other never-mind met... until that fateful day. I happened to be serving a good friend of mine who, as it turns out, was Ayesha's best friend. I served the table without noticing the beautiful woman sitting beside him. She had long dark hair, a beautifully trim body and eyes that would make you say yes to anything if stared into them. Of course, at that time, I hadn't fully explored the possibility that I could be with, let alone fall in love with a woman. In fact, I was only just discovering my ambiguous sexuality and had just started flirting with the idea of being with a woman. Ayesha on the other hand, noticed me immediately and before I knew it, started asking our mutual friend about me. “Is she straight or gay”? She asked him, to which he replied that he didn't know. Next thing I knew he was walking up to me asking me that exact question! I was totally taken aback...here was a question I hadn't asked myself yet, but yet it was so relevant to what I had been going through and experiencing at the time. I opted to answer with honesty. “I'm just discovering a new side of myself” I answered.
When I saw her, I couldn't believe that I had never previously noticed her... I had to know whether she was involved and whether she was into women or not. My friend obliged to find this information out for me. He came back with the answer that she was discovering a new side to herself...how was I supposed to know what that meant? The next day however, he sent her number to me with a message that she was waiting for my call. Of course, when I called, this was news to her. We hit it off however and made arrangements that we would see each other at some point...which never materialised.
With my previously failed relationships, I decided that it was time to be very specific about what it is that I wanted in a partner and with that, I made a list of all the attributes (as well as physical features) that I desired and left it up to the universe. Two days later, I geared up the courage to send her a text asking her to lunch. (All very cheesy I know, but hey, that’s me). I wasn't expecting a response at all but to my pleasant surprise, I received a text back within minutes saying that a lunch date would be great. During this period I was the acting manager at my old company and due to sheer delight (and not being sure of what time I would return to the office) I closed shop for the rest of the day!
Our lunch date went great! We were completely comfortable with each other and shared stories of our lives. Candice confided in me that she was in a complex period in her life and did not want to involve me in it.
Being with Ayesha presented two issues for me: first was that she was so beautiful and sincere that I could see myself falling for her, the second was that falling for her would mean that I am confirming the possibility that I was indeed a lesbian. I couldn't stay away from her though. We connected on every level and I found myself falling for who I had come to know as my best friend. She had the biggest heart of anyone I had ever met. She maintained that she knew all I was looking for was a great friend that I could just be myself with and that she was happy to be that to me. She did let me know however, that if we were to be together as a couple, she could see us being awesome together! I was starting to see that too.
Ayesha:
Even though we were friends, I knew that Candice was all that I had been looking so hopelessly for... and she didn't know it but she filled all the criteria on my list (down to the fine grey hairs she has on her head). I would rather have had her as a a dear friend in my life than not to have her in my life at all. Then one night, Candice called me. She was out with her friends and she said “I have been lying to myself. I'm around people that ordinarily I could possibly be with, but all I can think about and the only person I can imagine being with is you”. She asked me to come through to where she was but this was after 12 at night and so I told her to think about it and if she still wanted, I would come through to her in the morning. We ended up spending the entire night on the phone! And once day break came, we couldn't wait to see each other! We've been together, everyday, ever since. Three years on and still hopelessly in love and falling more everyday!
