It’s Friday. That means weekend. That means indulgence. No, I don’t mean THAT type of indulgence (though if you want to combine THAT type with this, see point 7). I’m talking about one of life’s other fine pleasures - chocolate. Now, I’m a big fan of chocolate. And I firmly believe that it is one of the best things since… well… since just about anything. It’s the food of the gods – no really, I’m not just saying that – chocolate actually comes from the plant Theobroma cacao, which in Latin means “food of the gods”. And it’s actually good for you. So to brighten up my weekend (and yours), I decided to compile a list of the top 10 reasons to eat chocolate. Note that the effects listed below are found to be the strongest in dark chocolate.
01.Chocolate is yummy
That’s pretty much enough reason for me. But don’t you worry. There are plenty more reasons to follow. I just wanted to point out the obvious and get this out of the way.
02.It will make you live longer
A study involving 8000 male Harvard graduates found that self-proclaimed “chocoholics” tend to live longer than their abstaining counterparts. This is probably due to chocolate’s health benefits listed below.
03.Chocolate contains vitamins, calcium, potassium, sodium and iron
Studies have suggested that people can eat chocolate instead of taking their vitamin supplements, and have the same end result. No, I’m not kidding. See the CNN article.
04.Chocolate is good for your heart
Chocolate contains high levels of polyphenol, which reduces the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein. This protects you against heart disease.
05.Chocolate is rich in anti oxidants
Free radicals are bad. They start chain reactions which damages cells and inhibit normal cellular reproduction. They also cause other bad things like cancer and heart disease. Trust me, you want to fight free radicals. But how? Once again, chocolate comes to the rescue. Chocolate is richly packed with potent anti-oxidants, which fight free radicals. The main anti-oxidant found in chocolate is Flavonoids, of which chocolate has double the amount found in red wine and three times that found in green tea. Apart from fighting free radicals, these anti-oxidants have also been found to increase the levels of “good cholesterol”, HDL, by almost 10% while making the “bad cholesterol”, LDL, less likely to lead to artery-clogging.
06.Chocolate will make you smarter
Dr Bryan Raudenbush (2006) reported that eating chocolate subtly enhances verbal and visual memory scores (This was shown by a preliminary study, which probably still needs some replicating). And in 2007, a symposium at the American Association for the Advancement of Science presented evidence that consuming chocolate can have positive effects on the brain. Experiments where they fed chocolate to mice suggested that cocoa stimulates neurovascular activity, which enhances memory and alertness.
07.Chocolate body paint
A study found that 50% of women would choose chocolate over sex. But why choose? I say, have both! And apart from all that healthy stuff, chocolate is also an aphrodisiac. It contains the “love-chemical” phenylethylamine, which releases the “happy-hormone” dopamine during orgasm.
08.Chocolate is good for PMS
If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably craved chocolate during those pre-menstrual parts of the month. Well, craved it more than usual (since I crave chocolate on a daily basis). This craving is probably due to chocolate’s high magnesium content, as most women develop a slight magnesium deficiency during this time. It’s also good for the mood-swing part of PMS, due to its anti-depressant properties (see below).
09.Chocolate is a natural anti-depressant
Eating chocolate is almost like having a cocktail of happy pills, except that it tastes better. It stimulates endorphin production (causing feelings of pleasure) and it contains various other happy-chemicals including Anandamide (a neurotransmitter known as "the bliss chemical"), Salsolinol (an anti-stress neurotransmitter), Serotonin (a natural antidepressant) and Tryptophan (an anti-depressant amino acid). A UK study even suggested that the odour of chocolate significantly reduces theta activity in the brain, causing enhanced relaxation.
10.Chocolate is good for your teeth
Okay. So, technically the sugar in chocolate is bad for your teeth. But chocolate is less harmful than many other sweet foods because of the antibacterial agents in cocoa beans, which sort of cancel out the bad effects of the sugar. This was discovered by researchers at Osaka University in Japan, who found that parts of the cocoa bean fights mouth bacteria and prevents tooth decay. This is so effective that scientists believe that components from chocolate might one day be used in mouthwash and toothpaste. However, it is still not recommended to eat chocolate instead of brushing your teeth, and Cape Town Lesbians will accept no responsibility for the consequences of anyone trying to fight tooth decay by only eating more chocolate.
