Coming out and detaching

Yes, we all have them – our own unique coming out story and although they may differ vastly, there’s one thing they all have in common, it is a life-changing experience. Coming out is one of the most difficult and nerve-racking experiences to face, but what a glorious victory awaits, no matter what the outcome. It takes a brave soul to risk loosing everyone you love, but believe me the gifts and gains far outweigh. Coming out is and will always be a personal choice though.

"The psychological rule says that when an inner situation is not made conscious, it happens outside as fate. That is to say, when the individual remains undivided and does not become conscious of his inner opposite, the world must perforce act out the conflict and be torn into opposing halves."

La Roux, the big question: Does it matter?

I devised a cunning plan to find out if Elly Jackson, the tasty lead from pop-synth duo La Roux, is in fact a lesbian. Although a genius idea, googling the terms ‘Elly Jackson’ and ‘Lesbian’ simultaneously didn’t quite yield the concrete answers I was looking for.

It did however reveal just how much of a hot topic her sexuality is at the moment. Celebrity gossip forums, gay and straight, are dying to know who she lets ruffle her quiff late at night. And frankly, so am I.

The Quest for Indifference

I am tired of the word ‘tolerance’. The dictionary records several meanings of this particular word- which now includes ‘acceptance’. To me, however, it means that someone does not agree with my ‘lifestyle’ but that they permit me to live it. And I have not asked for society’s permission to live my life in any way, shape or form.  So, as far as words go- ‘tolerance’ is not my favourite.

The reason for my rant on this glorious day is the continued refusal of the United States of America to legalize same sex marriage. The right to marriage is a basic human right (Article 16 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights) - this is being denied to certain humans because society only ‘tolerates’ gay relationships. How can this be right? Or righteous? Where is the outpouring of outrage from the South African gay and lesbian community?
