MIRIAM DANCING – on sale now
On Women’s Day 2009 in South Africa, Elise van Wyk launched an anthology of true stories by lesbian, bisexual and transgender women. Women in the LGBTI community often have to deal with the tension between the internalised homophobic images of same-sex love, which fundamentalist Christianity regularly endorses, and commitment to their own passionate hearts. In Miriam Dancing a diverse group of South African women tell their personal stories of love for their own kind.
Illustrated with beautiful black and white photographs, and printed on beige recycled paper, Miriam Dancing is also available under the Afrikaans title, Miriam Dans. These books can be ordered from Elise on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for a special launch price of R100. (If you want the book to be mailed, an additional R20 will be charged for packaging and postage.) By the end of the year the books will be available at bookshops at an estimated retail price of R170.

IAM has a vision of Southern African religious communities that are welcoming and affirming, where Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) people can participate fully and be strengthened in their spiritual, psychological and sexual identity as human beings. Inclusive & Affirming Ministries (IAM) works towards this vision through programmes that support and empower the LGBTI community and stimulate dialogue as the alternative to debate in building welcoming and affirming religious communities.

Beautiful Kitty Looking For Loving Home
I’m looking for a loving home for my beautiful, part-long-haired, 4-year-old cat called Egypt (female, spayed). Sadly, I can’t keep looking after her because I’m always having to travel at short notice. Egypt is fully house trained (doesn’t scratch the furniture, litter box trained, etc) although she prefers to spend the majority of her time outside, so she needs a place where she can be out and about. She is very good-natured and has never scratched or bitten anyone. She is friendly and loves being stroked. She’s used to children (although she doesn’t like being handled or played with roughly), and she’s also been used to sharing her home with other cats and dogs.
Egypt comes with her litter tray, a bagful of those special cat litter crystals, a month’s worth of food, and a carry-box.
If someone out there can give Egypt a good, loving home, please, please get in touch. I live in Diep River if you’d like to meet Egypt before making up your mind. Email me at

Cape Town Lesbians Features This Week
Two love letters
Song of Songs is a story about the sacred union ceremony of Chrissi Smith and Morag McAllister. Two love letters form part of their ritual.

Praying for my time to come
I often wonder why it is that I am so gay. Some people put it down to genetics, Freud said it was because of childhood trauma, and Simone de Beauvoir hinted that it might be narcissism. The more liberal and open minded say that human sexuality is fluid, like the Kinsey scale, we all float somewhere between preferring one gender or the other, and that most people rank somewhere around hetero with slightly gay tendencies.

“Parentals”: Guidance Is Advised
I think it is safe to say that meeting a girlfriend’s parents for the first time can and more likely will be an excruciating. And I say this with all the respect in the world.

CTL Confessional - October 2009
(I have added the latest secrets to this month's confessional.) We all have secrets. Some are never revealed. But some, even though we want to keep them secret, we experience a need to share. This is a place for sharing those secrets. Anyone can submit and anyone can read. And the person it was written for could be reading this now. The person it was written for could be you.

Latest Poem added to the CTL Art & Literature section:
A thousand times - by Melissa Murdoch http://www.capetownlesbians.co.za/artandliterature/poetry/215-a-thousand-times.html
Latest Erotic Lesbian Short Fiction added to the CTL Art & Literature section:
Speaking my soul - by Tass http://www.capetownlesbians.co.za/artandliterature/eroticfiction/214-erotic-lesbian-story-speaking-my-soul.html
P.S. anyone can write for Cape Town Lesbians. And I'm always looking for more articles and more writers. If you've got talent, and you have something meanignful to say, drop me an e-mail ;-)
